Step Afrika! introduces audiences to the importance of stepping in cultural identity, the use of body percussion as a means of communication, and to the continuity of the use of polyrhythms and audience participation from traditional Zulu dance to contemporary stepping.

Join us in the Civic Center lobbies one hour prior to the Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Family Series presentation of STEP AFRIKA. This free pre-performance event will be filled with family art-making activities, demonstrations, and other fun programs! Free to all ticketholders.


This exclusive Pre-Show Party will include:

  • West African Drumming with Anothony Stevens of CultureALL
  • Kenyan Beading with Josephine Shaw of CultureALL
  • Drill & Drum Corp demonstrations by The Isiserettes
  • Rotoscope art project with Jamal Hamilton from the Des Moines Art Center
  • Reading Corner hosted by Claudine Cheatem of Pyramid Theatre
