A Cedar Rapids teenager is one of 25 students in Iowa and Wisconsin receiving $1,000 in scholarship money from Alliant Energy.
Bella Dougherty from Thomas Jefferson High School received an Alliant Energy Innovation Scholarship for “outstanding community leadership and innovative problem solving,” according to a press release.
“We are thrilled to foster the young minds in our communities,” said Julie Bauer, manager of community affairs at Alliant Energy. “We look forward to seeing all they accomplish in the future to strengthen the science, technology, engineering and math workforce and make a positive impact in these critical roles and their communities.”
Award recipients were selected based on a written essay where students identified a problem in their community and suggested an innovative STEM solution, leadership in community service activities and volunteer work, and GPA and standardized test scores.
In 2020, Alliant scholarships helped 133 students and provided more than $120,000 in support.
Innovation Scholarship winners had to be 24 years old or younger, be enrolling for the first time at an undergraduate school, reside within Alliant Energy’s service territory at the time of application and be a dependent child or current customer of Interstate Power and Light or Wisconsin Power and Light.
