BUSINESS RECORD EVENT
One month until Fearless Annual Celebration

We invite you to join us and others equally passionate about empowering Iowa women as we celebrate two years of the Business Record’s Fearless initiative. Women, gender-nonconforming individuals and male allies are all encouraged to be fearless with us.

To celebrate Fearless, a lineup of inspiring women will share their stories of fearlessness and courage. Attendees will be seated at a table with female leaders, including some of our past Women of Influence honorees, who will lead powerful discussions to share perspectives and insights on succeeding in work and life. Attendees will build additional connections with leaders and other participants as they rotate to different tables throughout the event.

As part of our Fearless core values, this event will create an atmosphere where everyone has a seat and voice at the table. This dynamic interaction will give you not only a chance to learn from others’ experiences and engage in topics facing women in the workplace, but you’ll also have the opportunity to develop and deepen your relationships with women across the state.

Date: Thursday, Nov. 17
Location: Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel, 1800 50th St.
Time: 10 a.m. to noon

DMPS closure of 3 low-income after-school sites causes hardship, raises equity concerns
Des Moines Register: The same staffing shortages that have reduced child care availability across the nation prompted Des Moines Public Schools officials to close after-school programs at Wright, Garton and Willard elementary schools earlier this year. Some parents and school officials are now questioning the fairness of those closures ― all at schools with larger Hispanic populations and a high proportion of low-income students.

The student debt relief application is live
Iowa Capital Dispatch: President Joe Biden announced Monday that student loan borrowers can begin to apply for debt relief through a new online application. Biden said the application is easy and fast. It will allow every borrower with an income of $125,000 or less ($250,000 for married couples) to have up to $10,000 in debt forgiven, or $20,000 forgiven for those with Pell Grants. Those income levels have to have been during 2020 or 2021. No documents need to be uploaded with the application, Biden said.

The Entropy Vest warms your body by changing its state of matter

Fast Company: I really like the Entropy Vest, an active heating garment that can warm your body using no insulating materials or electronics whatsoever, just a substance that changes its state at the flip of a mechanical switch. I like its name, which sounds like a sci-fi video game garment that sucks your enemies’ energy to feed your rail gun and life-support system. I like the function, which, in my case, would be to keep me toasty while walking my kid to school on cold winter mornings. And I really, really like the form, even if nobody is actually going to see me morphing into Kevin Flynn under my jacket as its network of tubes — full of dark blue liquid — turns into Tron’s cyan-colored gel, slowly extending heat through my torso to reach a temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. "We love seeing the chemical reaction taking place," Ryan Mario Yasin tells me over email. Yasin is the founder and CEO of Petit Pli, a clothing company that he describes as "a material technology company" formed by engineers, neuroscientists and designers. "We are always looking for ways to challenge ourselves with solution-driven products that we believe need to exist in the world."

MercyOne employees will be paid same as last paycheck due to ransomware attack
Employees at MercyOne will be paid Friday, but how much they'll be paid will remain the same as their last paycheck. A ransomware attack on MercyOne's former parent company CommonSpirit has taken its payroll software offline. Because of that outage, employees will be paid their full-time equivalent plus the same amount of overtime hours as their last paycheck, according to an internal message sent to some employees obtained by KCCI. The same internal communication said vacation time, overtime and other pay will be sorted out once the system comes back online. Read more
