Welcome Spring at Des Moines' Annual Home Show
Spring arrives this weekend by way of the Des Moines Home and Garden Show at the Iowa Events Center. You’ll find inspiration for warm-weather projects and connect with local professionals who can help.
More than 250 vendors will show and promote furniture, home decor, landscaping and home improvement services as well as appliances, heating and cooling systems, flooring, and fixtures for kitchens and bathrooms.
Also, Kaleb Wyse, a fourth-generation Iowan living on his family farm and documenting the journey in a newsletter and website, Wyse Guide, will speak on the stage located in Hy-Vee Hall Thursday and Friday nights at 6 p.m. The full stage schedule is available online.

ARTS AND CULTURE Ballet gala: Ballet Des Moines will host a fundraiser, "Gravity Gala," March 4 at the Des Moines Heritage Center. The event will include a sneak preview of the company's production of “Of Gravity and Light,” premiering April 22 at the Des Moines Civic Center. There will be a four-course dinner courtesy of chef Aaron Holt, a full bar including space-themed

Book fest news: The 2022 DSM Book Festival last week announced two additional featured authors for this year’s event on March 26 at Capital Square. Imbolo Mbue, author of “Behold the Dreamers” and “How Beautiful We Were,” and Dawnie Walton, author of “The Final Revival of Opal & Nev,” will headline in the morning. The previously announced
headliners are Stephanie Land and Angeline Boulley. Learn more about attending or volunteering at the festival online.

Free art show: The Des Moines Women’s Club's 114th Art Exhibition will be March 6-13 at Hoyt Sherman Place, featuring works by professional and nonprofessional artists. Award winners will be announced at the opening ceremony on March 6 and a gallery night with refreshments will be March 11. Admission is free; artists must register for the exhibition by March 2.

Plant 'Parenting' Becomes a Growing Trend
Writer: Karla Walsh Shelter-in-place orders spawned a variety of new hobbies and ways to pass the time, whether scrubbing floorboards with a toothbrush or adopting a furry friend. Some Des Moines residents developed a newfound or rediscovered interest in plants, due to the low level of commitment required, the affordable cost, and the mental and physical benefits of being surrounded by nature—even while inside.
“The pandemic drove plant sales up this past year—one of my wholesaler’s sales are up 60% from 2019,” says Allie Delaney, owner of Renovation Jungle just off Ingersoll Avenue next door to
El Patio.
“It’s way more mainstream than it was when I was binge-watching plant YouTube channels two to three years ago and ordering rare cuttings on Etsy,” she adds. “Now it’s not just 20- to 30-year-old ‘plant nerds’—it’s our friends, our moms and our siblings rediscovering houseplants and actually having success with them.” Continue reading on dsmmagazine.com
