Spanx founder gifts employees $10,000, first-class plane tickets: 'Celebrate this moment'

Spanx founder Sara Blakely announced last week that she is gifting employees two first-class plane tickets and $10,000 to spend on their trip after the company announced a deal with private equity firm Blackstone.

“This is a very big moment for each and every one of you,” Blakely appeared to tell employees in a video posted last week on Instagram.

Later in the video, she spun a small globe in front of employees.

“I’m spinning a globe because, to celebrate this moment, I have bought each one of you two first-class tickets to anywhere in the world,” she added, prompting cheers and shocked reactions.

“You know, if you go on a trip, you might want to go out to a really nice dinner. You might want to go out to a really nice hotel. So, with everybody’s two first class tickets to anywhere in the world, you are each getting $10,000,” Blakely added.

Employees in the video said they are going to Japan, Croatia, South Africa, Antarctica and other destinations.

“I really want every employee to celebrate this moment in their own way and create a memory that will last them a lifetime,” Blakely shared in her caption on Instagram alongside the video.

USA TODAY has reached out to Spanx for additional information on the gift.

Maryland:Real estate company surprised all its employees with $10 million bonus

Blackstone is buying a majority stake in Spanx, with the deal valuing the shapewear brand at $1.2 billion, according to multiple reports. Blakely also confirmed last week on Instagram that she “will remain a significant shareholder and continue to help the business fulfill its greatest potential.”

Spanx isn't the first company to garner attention for giving employees impressive presents. In 2019, a real estate company headquartered in Maryland gave employees a shared $10 million bonus.
