  • Through its first impact report, the team at Community Broadband Action Network (CBAN) got to step back and take stock of the work its done with communities, internet providers and advocates for the first time since its founding in 2018. The findings have helped CBAN look ahead to what's next for the member organization, including more digital equity work and new opportunities to connect its members. Digital News Editor Sarah Diehn talked with two of CBAN's co-founders Jon Willow and Curtis Dean about the report, and the federal BEAD funding coming to states to support digital equity for this week's innovationIOWA newsletter. Michelle Book is a self-described “hunger fighter” in the community who has made it her mission to end food insecurity. She has served in her role at the Food Bank of Iowa since 2016, where she works to get 2 million pounds of free and reduced-cost food into the hands of hungry Iowans each month. It’s just the latest position she’s held with a philanthropic mission. Before that, she led global community engagement at DuPont Pioneer and was responsible for distributing $6 million to causes like food insecurity, science education and community betterment every year. She serves on many local community boards, and in 2014, the Business Record named her as a Woman of Influence. This year, Michelle has been named as a 2024 business leader you should know. Early in her career, organizations from five communities across the country began recruiting Mary Sellers, who was emerging as a nonprofit leader in her native state of Florida. Initially, coming to Des Moines was No. 5 on her list. That is until she came here – and then the kindness of the people made her move Iowa’s ranking to No. 1. “When I first came up and met with the people, that’s when Iowa went to [No. 1.],” Sellers said. But days into moving here to become the president and CEO of the Science Center of Iowa in March of 1998, three tornadoes converged over Interstate 80 and it snowed two days later. She and her husband, who was from Orlando, almost drove back to Florida. But instead, she stayed to lead the nonprofit for a decade. In that time, she orchestrated a $63 million capital campaign to fund the new facility where the Science Center is today. Just three years into her tenure in Des Moines, she was named to the Business Record’s 2001 Forty Under 40 class. This year, her fellow Forty Under 40 alumni voted to name her as the Forty Under 40 Alum of the Year. Sellers currently serves as president of the United Way of Central Iowa, her second stint leading the local arm of the global nonprofit powerhouse. She previously led the organization from 2012 to 2017 before she was recruited to lead as the United States president of United Way Worldwide. Read our Q&A with her here: https://lnkd.in/eNa-pgNm

  • Congratulations to Lauren Burt, who is celebrating four years with BPC today! Lauren leads the design team for the Business Record, a monumental task that includes everything from the weekly newspaper to events to social media posts like this one. “It’s fun because every day is a little bit different,” Lauren said.  One of Lauren’s strengths is her ability to balance efficiency with creativity, a quality she’s proud to share with the rest of the design team. “You wouldn’t think the two go hand-in-hand, but when you’re organized, then it gives you more time to be creative,” Lauren said.  She’s looking forward to upcoming issues like the annual Real Estate Magazine and innovationIOWA Magazine, which give her the creative opportunity to design for a new medium.  “I always explain to people that yes, I work for a newspaper, but it doesn’t look like a newspaper,” Lauren said. “We have a lot of fun with the Business Record. It pushes us to be more creative every year.”

  • The Iowa Economic Development Authority Board today approved the city of Cedar Rapids providing $56 million in local property tax exemptions over 20 years for Google Inc.’s proposed data center project in Cedar Rapids. The project will be a $576 million capital investment, which is the largest investment from an economic development project in Cedar Rapids’ history and among the largest in the state, according to IEDA documents. With a unanimous vote, the board allowed Cedar Rapids to access the state’s High Quality Jobs (HQJ) program and authorize its local tax abatement provisions. The city of Cedar Rapids had already approved the incentives on its end, pending the board’s decision today, according to IEDA officials at the meeting. https://lnkd.in/g587rcQw
