Inclusive, Online-Friendly Curriculum Earns Iowa City Art Teacher Statewide Award

The pandemic has changed how schooling happens across subjects. But when it comes to art education, achieving a hybrid in-person, online model required a little extra reconfiguring.

Enter Buffy Quintero. Quintero is an elementary school art teacher in Iowa City, and she took the pandemic as an opportunity to design a new district-wide elementary art curriculum, putting a deep focus on diverse representation of artists and art forms.

Quintero’s work has earned her the title of Elementary Art Educator of the Year from the Art Educators of Iowa. She joins this episode of Talk of Iowa to discuss her work and the importance of inclusive arts education.
