A campaign is underway in Ames to name auditorium after longtime director
SHOW YOUR NEWS TONIGHT. ONE GROUP IS CAMPAIGN TO CHANGE THE NAME OF THE AMES HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM. THE GROUP WANTS TO NAME IT AFTER WAYNE, A HANSEN, WHO WAS THE SCHOOL’S DRAMA DIRECTOR FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS. HE WAS HIRED BY THE SCHOOL IN 1970. HANSEN TAUGHT ENGLISH SPEECH AND THEATER ARTS ALONG WITH DIRECTING DOZENS OF PLAYS. HE DIED IN 2020, SHORTLY AFTER HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY. ORGANIZERS OF THE CAMPAIGN SAY HE WAS HIGHLY REGARDED BY STUDENTS AND STAFF AT THE SCHOOL AND THIS IS JUST ONE WAY TO REMEMBER THE IMPACT HE MADE ON EVERYONE WHO CROSSED HIS PATH. THERE WAS A LEGACY THAT SO MANY PEOPLE COMMENT ABOUT THE INCLUSION IS HOW HE GAVE EVERYBODY A CHANCE, HOW HE HAD SUCH A STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE, HOW HE GAVE EVERYONE THE TIME TO SHINE AND WORK EITHER BACKSTAGE OR ON STAGE. Hansen was hired by the school in 1970. He taught English, speech and theater arts, along with directing dozens of plays.Hansen died in 2020, shortly after his 80th birthday.Organizers of the campaign said he was highly regarded by students and staff at the school and this is just one way to remember the impact he made on everyone who crossed his path."It was a legacy that so many people comment about, the inclusiveness, he gave everybody a chance," said Jami Simon, a former Ames student. "How he had such a standard of excellence, how he gave everyone time to shine. Either backstage or on stage."A change.org petition to name the auditorium after Hansen has gained about 1,800 signatures.Simon said the school has started a task force to look into naming the auditorium in his honor.
