Des Moines Register

Karissa Schweizer, a standout high school performer at Dowling Catholic who later became one of college track's top athletes while at Missouri, qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the 5,000 meter run on Monday night.

Schweizer finished second to Elise Cranny, who passed the Iowan with about 200 meters to go at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon. Schweizer finished 15 minutes, 28.11 seconds. The top three automatically qualify for the games later this summer.

The Urbandale native excelled in the 5000-meter run in college, winning two national titles. The 2021 Summer Games, which were delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, begin on July 23.
