Creating a warm and inviting condo

My client Cheryl bought a condo to be near to family and give them all a place to hang out whenever she’s in Des Moines since she travels a lot.  She asked me to come and help her pick out the furniture for her living room and nook. I really enjoyed getting to know Cheryl through this process – she was so fun to work with!

The overall look she was after is transitional in design style with light feeling furniture in neutral colors – except for the sofa, she knew she wanted to be charcoal gray. She already had brushed nickel and black accents, plus a black and gray wall and ivory carpet, so we had a palette to start with. In the nook she wanted a chair that was both comfortable and unique – she needed to be able to read and knit comfortably in it and it had to have great arms. In the living room, she wanted a three cushion transitional sofa plus a chair and ottoman. Cheryl was looking for a low maintenance rug with a subtle pattern…simple, but interesting.

Design Plan

Cheryl saw the Kira sofa and loved the arms on it…and that it was a three cushion. It has a tight back, which will make it appear lighter and smaller scale in the room…which is good for a condo. It also has a matching chair and ottoman which are really comfortable pieces and the perfect scale for her room. The rug we chose is perfect – it has the light tones of her walls but also the deep colors of her furniture in a warm color palette to compliment the warm finishes in her condo. Cheryl also loved the Camden chair – it’s comfortable with a great style.
The sofa was the perfect size for the space when I created her floor plan. The chair and ottoman also worked really well – and they left enough space to walk around the kitchen and nook. We ended up using an 8 x 10 rug that softened up all the wood in the space and reduced echoing. Cheryl’s goals for the space were to make it an inviting, cozy place for her family to enjoy. A place where they could get together and have great conversations in her open concept condo. She also wanted the rug to be super dog-friendly!

Cheryl loved all the furniture when we delivered and set up the room. The Camden chair turned out to be amazing – the absolute perfect scale and comfort level for her! The fabric looked amazing and complimented the rug so well, along with the ivory in her bedroom (as the living room opens to the bedroom this was important). Cheryl thought it would be difficult to find just the right rug for her space, but we did it and she absolutely loves it! The Kira furniture in the charcoal fabric looked so pretty – especially with her brushed nickel and black accents. It also helped pull out the darker tones in the rug. We’re just waiting on her coffee table (we love the addition of concrete in here) to arrive and then we’ll start working on art, end tables and lamps!
