Choose the Right Rug

Rugs are often an afterthought in a room…but they should be one of the centerpieces! You have an amazing opportunity to add a beautiful large piece of texture to your room with a rug. And with most of today’s homes having hardwood floors, a rug is a necessity.

Today, we’re going to give you 4 tips to pick out a perfect rug for your room.

The Bigger the Better

Always go big. Yes, big rugs can get expensive…but trust us, go small and you will regret it. Most living areas need an 8 x 10 rug at least, and would probably benefit from an 11 x 14 instead. You want all your furniture to sit comfortably on the rug and define the sitting area.

Choose the Rug First

If you can, we’d recommend choosing the rug first – then work backward and picking out your furniture. This way, you can pick a rug with a great color palette and then focus on choosing paint, furniture, and accessories based on that palette. You’ll know the colors work together and that you like them all because you’ve already seen them all work together in the palette!

Think about Room Usage

The rug you buy for under a dining room table should have different attributes than the rug you buy for a living room. Rugs that are in areas you eat in should be easy to clean and easy to mask stains (ie, indoor/outdoor with a pattern) while rugs that are placed in living areas can be a bit higher end since you won’t be dropping food on them.

Plan for your Lifestyle

If you’ve got dogs and kids…a shag rug may not be for you. The amount of stuff that can get caught up in those shag fibers may drive you crazy. Instead go for a low pile, easy to vacuum rug with a great pattern that hides a great deal.

We know picking a rug is a big decision – which is why our team of talented designers at by Design will come to your home and help you choose the perfect rug!
