I was so excited to work with my client Wendy on designing her new West Des Moines home…I had helped her furnish her last home so we already had a design relationship established when they built this new custom home.
With a new, brighter, larger layout, the old furniture looked under-scaled and heavy feeling. With the rooms being flooded with natural light we needed to lighten and brighten the look. The home was very neutral so we decided calm and reassuring blues would be the accent to flow in and out of the rooms.
As you walk into the family room, there is a bump out that called for something special to go on there. I decided to accent that wall by painting it a deep ocean blue called Endless Sea (SW9150). Then I chose a dark-stained etagere to add interest and showcase some great accessories.
This room will be a gathering place for their large family, where they can watch tv or play games at their new game table. The Chelsea reclining sectional, while light in color is totally practical in an easy-care sunbrella fabric. We added two more leather Nico recliners, to make sure everyone has a comfortable spot to hang out. The metal base on these ties in nicely to the cocktail table as well as the game table.
The art over the sectional was especially chosen to incorporate the ocean blue and the warmth of the wood floors. I added 2 neutral tree pictures over the console since we didn’t want to take away from the three blue ottomans. The media piece under the tv adds some graceful curves and interest on top with the long gondola tray on it.
This is the way we handled the 2 walls in the dining room. We didn’t want to repeat art on both walls, so the oversized mirror anchored one side and made the 2 pictures “Shine” on the other side. We didn’t want to overwhelm the space. We brought in the Navy blue with the gold accents to highlight the dining room area. Since it is interesting to intermingle metal tones, the gold plays nicely off of the chrome on the chairs and even the bronze in the lighting.
The rooms in her home flow nicely into each other without feeling too similar. I think it is a timeless color palette and one that they will enjoy for a long time!
