History Lesson Lunches

Enjoy a farm-to-table lunch and connect to interesting agricultural stories. Edited from 1895 to 1933 by 3 generations of Henry Wallaces, Wallaces’ Farmer was an essential resource for farm families across Iowa and the Midwest. This program includes excerpts from reader letters and editorials that will prompt reminiscences and discussions around your table.

Before the Wallaces launched their now-famous agriculture journal in 1895, Henry Wallace owned 160 acres in Adair County, including the 40 acres of what is now the Wallace Farm. His son, Henry C. Wallace farmed the land from 1887 to 1892 and Henry A. Wallace was born on the property in 1888. History Lesson Lunches make the connection between that farm and their work of helping farm families be successful through the pages of Wallaces’ Farmer.

Scheduled throughout the year, History Lesson Lunches are open to reservations from the general public.  Nearly all the fruits and vegetables used in the menu are grown at the Wallace Farm. Other ingredients are locally sourced whenever possible. Please let us know about dietary restrictions and accessibility needs in advance.

Safety practices: Note that the Gathering Barn dining room is community seating, with tables of 2 to 6 people. We do our best to keep groups separate but might have to put small groups together. Please let us know your preference and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

Because our event experiences are planned on pre-registrations, fees are non-refundable if cancellation received less than 10 days before the event date. Refunds for reservations made by credit card will reflect a deduction of the transaction fees. Registrants are always welcome to send someone in their place if unable to attend.

There are no upcoming events.
