Nanotechnology drives gene detection system ExpresSeed
By Kate Hayden | Staff Writer

What do you get when a chemist pokes his head into a physicist's Iowa laboratory?

Something very, very small.

Two Central Iowa professors and a college-based venture capital incubator are behind the nanotechnology introduced in ExpresSeed, a new, portable genetic detection system.

Developed by Aaron Santos and Derek Lyons at Simpson College, the hand-held system is only slightly larger than an iPhone 6 but gives farmers a portable system to detect thousands of genetic traits in a single plant sample, right at the sample’s origin point.

Once the user plugs a sample into the ExpresSeed device, the system uploads data into cloud-based storage to aid in field management and gene detection, Lyons said in a pitch to 1 Million Cups Des Moines on Feb. 21 at the Science Center of Iowa. The system allows users to confirm the presence of traits both wanted and unwanted -- something Lyons said could benefit producers, regulators and patent holders alike.

The system, which uses DNP123 nanotechnology developed by Santos and Lyons, could also be expanded into wildlife management or veterinary science capabilities -- "any organic matter" that could be tested, Lyons said.

ExpresSeed launched in 2017 with membership by the Emerge Foundation, a venture capital corporation also based at Simpson College.

'Flood of Ideas' to rethink disaster recovery in Iowa
NewBoCo in Cedar Rapids is taking registrations for a three-day "Flood of Ideas" event, scheduled June 8-10 at NewBoCo headquarters. Organizers say the event aims to build teams with ideas on disaster prevention, organizing volunteers, protecting houses or other needs. The event was inspired by the 2008 flood, which caused an estimated $500 million in damage to city facilities alone.

Pi515 offers entry to tech world for at-risk or refugee students
A Des Moines-based initiative gives at-risk and refugee students their first boost inside STEM-based careers. Pi515 founder Nancy Mwirotsi is connecting Central Iowa students with sponsoring tech companies to teach STEM-related skills, including web/app development, robotics and financial literacy. The program gained 45 girls in the year’s first recruiting event, Mwirotsi said. Pi515 has already raised $15,000 during its first fundraiser last November.

Data summer school opens enrollment for 2018 session
The Midwest Big Data Summer School is taking applications for researchers and professionals who want a boost in "big data." To be held May 14-17 at Iowa State University, organizers say the program will help develop data-driven research, communication and understanding of ethical issues in participants, who can take one of four specialized tracks of study.

New tool aids conservation on farms
The National Farmers Union and the Natural Resources Conservation Service have developed a free tool to help farmers and ranchers improve soil conservation. The Resource Stewardship Evaluation Tool uses an evaluation to point landowners toward goals. Aaron Lehman, a fifth-generation family farmer in Polk County, was one of the first farmers in Iowa to test the tool, and was impressed with the process. "It was very easy to take a snapshot of our farm from a conservation standpoint," said Lehman. "From there we could evaluate the potential benefits of additional conservation practices on that individual field. It takes a lot of guesswork out of conservation planning."

PREDICTION
Each week we ask a community leader from various industries to have a little fun, peer into their crystal ball and look out 10 years in an effort to predict the future.
THIS WEEK: Megan Vollstedt, executive director, Iowa AgriTech Accelerator

In 10 years ... The agriculture industry will adopt a larger presence of autonomous machinery "learning" the land and supporting farming operations in the field. The next generation of farmers will spearhead this effort — the Generation Xers and millennials who brought innovative AI technologies to the farm and will advance to the early majority, bringing more technology to the farm as baby boomers begin to retire.
