Bridgestone-Firestone workers rally for better employment contract
United Steel Workers 310 represents more than 900 Bridgestone-Firestone workers.
On Thursday, they walked from their union office across Second Avenue to the tire plant. Most had signs asking for a fair and equitable contact.
They say workers are struggling to make ends meet while the company is making record profits.
The union is asking for better wages, equal health insurance for all employees and more flexibility in schedules.
"Going on strike is not the goal by any means," said Bill Campbell, USW 310 vice president. "It's just to get a fair contract. By doing things like this, we try to do them ahead of time so we don't have to go on strike."
In a statement, Bridgestone said: "We are committed to an open and good-faith discussion and we're optimistic that a mutually satisfactory agreement can be reached."
